From Rob Ford’s non-state of emergency to dissecting the response to the ice storm

After a pretty wild year in Toronto politics, we ended the year with one of those wildcards that comes along once in a while — an ice storm that cut off power to hundreds of thousands of Torontonians and hundreds of thousands more 905ers. I never lost power, but only by a weird quirk, as all the neighborhoods around mine were dark for days. The city seems to have responded well. That’s partly due to luck. But the city, and the surrounding jurisdictions, responded quickly and well to a very complex situation. But I just can’t credit the handful of councillors who are insisting that Rob Ford should have declared a state of emergency and called for help from above. I think Toronto did just fine.

The city seems to be responding well from Rob Ford’s non-state of emergency to dissecting the response to the ice storm.
