GM to Import Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid from China

According to a report from Bloomberg, General Motors will import the Cadillac CT6 plug-in hybrid from China to the U.S. It will be the second GM vehicle sourced from China, the first one being the Buick Envision, which made its North American debut at the 2016 Detroit auto show.

The decision to import cars from China shows GM’s confidence in the ability of its Chinese factories to produce high-quality vehicles. Also, China is expected to be a large market for the plug-in CT6. Cadillac’s chief marketing officer, Uwe Ellinghaus, reportedly said that the high import tariff makes it expensive for the company to build cars in the U.S. and export them to China. Incentives from the Chinese government that encourage people to buy plug-in hybrid vehicles should also help boost sales in the Chinese market, according to GM President Dan Ammann. The plug-in hybrid version of the CT6 will likely sell in small numbers here in the U.S.

In addition to China, GM will also build the Cadillac CT6 in the U.S. The model goes into production at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant starting this month. Shipments to dealers are scheduled for March.

Cadillac will offer three gas variants of the CT6: a 265-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four, a 335-hp 3.6-liter V-6, and a new 404-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6. All gas engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The CT6 plug-in hybrid features a 2.0-liter turbo-four paired to two electric motors backed by an 18.4-kWh lithium-ion battery with 192 pouch cells sandwiched between the rear seats and the trunk. Total system output is expected to be at 335 hp and 432 lb-ft of torque.
