Spied! 2017 Audi R8 Spyder Caught in the Buff

A bright yellow 2017 Audi R8 Spyder has been spotted out in the wild without camouflage. The mid-engine sports car appears to be “showroom-ready,” according to our spy photographer.

Although the upcoming R8 Spyder shares the same front end as the 2017 R8 coupe, the rear gains a full-length vent between the taillights to further aid engine cooling. The rest of the rear vents appear to be the same for both body styles.

Like the R8 coupe, we expect the top-spec 540-hp V10 and 602-hp V10 Plus trims to appear first followed by a new twin-turbo V-6 engine that replaces the previous-generation R8’s base V-8. The new twin-turbo V-6 will also power the next-generation Audi RS 4 sedan.

In our testing, a 2017 Audi R8 V10 Plus coupe hit 60 mph in a super-quick 2.6 seconds and sprinted to the end of the quarter-mile in just 10.6 seconds at 129.8 mph. The coupe stopped from 60 mph in just 103 feet and lapped the figure-eight in 23.2 seconds at 0.92 g average and pulled 1.01 g average around the skidpad. We expect the heavier R8 Spyder to be slightly slower than the coupe.

Look for Audi to officially reveal the 2017 Audi R8 Spyder sometime in the next few months.
