2018 Honda CR-V Spied For the First Time

The 2018 Honda CR-V has been caught testing for the first time wearing its production body, and right away we can tell that it’s going to be an evolutionary change from the current generation. Compared to the current CR-V, the fifth generation will grow in size and become more upscale. A seven-seat variant is also rumored, meaning that the new crossover will be significantly larger than the car it replaces.

While the prototype’s side profile is similar to the current model, there are new design cues that stick out even through the swirly camouflage. The grille, for example, looks similar to the one found on the smaller HR-V. Out back, the curvature of the liftgate has been streamlined, making it appear less angular than the one found on the current car. Meanwhile, the taillights now extend onto the liftgate. This particular prototype looks like a higher trim level as well because it’s sporting the same full-LED headlights found on range-topping variants of the Accord and Civic. There also appears to be a unique LED light strip on each headlight cluster that has a different shape from its sedan siblings.

Engine choices for the 2018 CR-V will likely change from the current naturally-aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder to a turbocharged unit. This particular prototype indicates that there might be new powertrains for the CR-V thanks to the dual exhaust tips out back. A hybrid variant — likely a plug-in — is also rumored to be in the cards for the fifth-generation CR-V. Expect the new CR-V to also gain the newest iteration of the Honda Link infotainment system and the Honda Sensing suite of active safety features.
