Brandon Halsey stripped of middleweight title for missing weight at Bellator 137

Brandon Halsey had the opportunity to prove his middleweight dominance in his first Bellator title defense later tonight on Spike TV. Unfortunately for him, those plans have changed, and he has only himself to blame.

This could not have come as a surprise to the “Bull.”

After failing to make weight by a significant margin for tonight’s (Fri., May 15, 2015) Bellator 137 title defense, middleweight Brandon Halsey is being fined 20 percent of his purse by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC). 10 percent of that fine goes directly to the CSAC, and the other 10 percent goes to his opponent, Kendall Grove.

The consequences don’t end there, as Bellator has given Halsey no opportunity to retain his title. If the “Bull” wins his bout against “Da Spyder,” the title is vacated. If he loses, Grove is Bellator’s new middleweight champion.

One has to wonder how former champion Alexander Shlemenko feels about this.

Halsey was not the only one to fail spectacularly at the weigh-ins, coming in at 188.1, while Grove actually came in under the limit at 184.9. Co-main event bantamweight Mike Richman was nowhere close to the contracted fight weight, claiming that he came in at 139.2 because his body “dried up” in the sauna.

Preliminary fighters didn’t fare much better. Light heavyweight Virgil Zwicker was 206.7 for his bout. Women’s featherweight A.J. Jenkins was 146.7. The only fighter over the limit to come close was bantamweight Joe Taimanglo, who was 136.2 for his fight with Antonio Duarte (135.1).

Full Bellator 137 weigh-in results are available here. The show goes on tonight at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, Calif. with preliminary fights at 7 p.m. ET and live Spike TV fights at 9 p.m. ET.
