Notable guests gathered at the Rosewater Room in downtown Toronto to celebrate the work of the Torstar chair and CTV chief political correspondent Craig Oliver.
In his signature bow tie, Torstar chair John Honderich received hugs and handshakes from his peers Wednesday night as he was inducted into the Canadian News Hall of Fame.
Notable guests gathered at the Rosewater Room in downtown Toronto to celebrate the work of Honderich and CTV chief political correspondent Craig Oliver.
As a reporter, editor, publisher and now chair of the Torstar board, Honderich has seen every corner of the newsroom.
“It’s been an extraordinary run with so many highlights,” Honderich said.
As a reporter, those highlights included covering the fall of the Joe Clark government, the “resurrection” of Pierre Trudeau and Ronald Reagan’s term in Washington. He’s also particularly proud of the Star’s tenacious, Michener award-winning coverage of Rob Ford (open Rob Ford’s policard). His dedication has earned him a spot as a Member of the Order of Canada and praise from even those he aims to hold to account.
“John has always been a community builder, a city builder,” said Premier Kathleen Wynne in her opening remarks at the gala event.
And it’s no accident.
