McLaren just showed off its vision for future Formula 1 cars, and it’s packed with wild technology like self-repairing body panels and holographic displays. These are just a few of the items found on the McLaren MP4-X concept car, which McLaren Honda F1 racer Jenson Button appropriately tweeted as “one sexy bit of kit.”

With the MP4-X, teams will never have to worry about how much energy the hybrid powertrain is storing or expending. That’s because it features an electric inductive recharging system that gets juice from the track’s surface. Implementing this today would obviously be insanely expensive. The MP4-X would also store that energy in “thin batteries” set throughout the chassis and body panels instead of just one big chunk of battery cells.

Those body panels would not only be an integral part of the crash structure, but they would also have the ability to return to their original shape and strength. Additionally, the body panel’s logos are essentially green-screen digital systems that change based on the targeted audience viewing via the web or TV.

The closed-cockpit setup provides a long-list of technological advances. A holographic head-up display, for example, can better inform drivers about the proximity of their opponents, while also projecting vital vehicle data. The holographic system also has the ability to track the driver’s brain patterns to control certain vehicle systems.
