Last night (Sat., May 23, 2015), Travis Browne and Andrei Arlovski brawled at UFC 187 inside the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. In a wild scrap, Arlovski scored a nasty knockout. Find out how below!
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweights Travis Browne and Andrei Arlovski went after the knockout last night (May 23, 2015) at UFC 187 inside the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Having won four of his last five fights — including four knockouts — Browne entered this bout in a rather strong position. With a victory over the former champion, Browne could find himself challenging for the title before long.
Arlovski was on a four fight win streak, including the first two bouts of his current UFC run. This fight likely represented Arlovski’s final chance to announce himself as a modern day contender, and he needed to make the most of it.
The Belarusian started the fight very well, landing a brutal right hand. Browne was on shaky legs and ate some solid shots, but he once again proved his heart and chin by surviving. Undeterred, both men whipped out heavy punches with complete disregard for their health.
In the remainder of the round, Arlovski repeatedly rocked Browne with brutal punches, including a pair of back fists. Just as Arlovski began closing in on the finish, Browne landed one of the massive hooks he’d been throwing and sent Arlovski to his knees.
Unfortunately for the Hawaiian, he was barely conscious and could not land with his follow up punches. Arlovski recovered, returned to his feet, and then tagged Browne with an uppercut and cross.
It was very reminiscent of his finish over Roy Nelson.
This was a spectacular win for Arlovski, one that cannot be argued. “Pitbull” looked fast and dangerous, connecting with his right hand over and over. In addition, he managed to recover from getting rocked, which should help quiet rumors about his chin.
After this win, there are two potential opponents for Arlovski. Both Junior dos Santos and Stipe Miocic are closing in on another title shot, and Arlovski would be a fitting match up for either man.
This was a disappointing loss for Browne. He’s clearly an extremely tough fighter and powerful athlete, but he’s been both of those things since he first entered the Octagon. Browne still relies almost entirely on his physical tools, and when faced with an opponent who could match his speed, it cost him dearly.
As for what’s next for Browne, hopefully he continues to work on his boxing. The next time he walks into the Octagon, Browne should face off with heavyweight veteran Roy Nelson.
