Volvo Wants to Sell 1 Million Electrified Cars Globally by 2025

Volvo wants to sell up to 1 million electrified cars globally between now and 2025. The plan includes hybrids and a new fully electric vehicle (EV) slated for the 2019 model year. The Swedish automaker says it will offer at least two hybrid versions of every model in its lineup.

“It is a deliberately ambitious target,” said Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo president and CEO, in a release. “It is going to be a challenge, but Volvo wants to be at the forefront of this shift to electrification.”

Over the past five years, the company has been working toward more electrified vehicles including its two all-new vehicle architectures underpinning its current and future models. The architectures, which include the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) for smaller models and the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) for larger models, are package-protected for either hybrid or fully electric setups.

The SPA chassis will underpin the 60 and 90 series vehicles, while the CMA will underpin the 40 series vehicles. All vehicles will be available with hybrid powertrains.

Additionally, Volvo has pledged to implement climate-neutral operations by 2025, have women in 35 percent of its leading positions, continue working toward preventing serious injury or death by anyone in a new Volvo by 2020, and promote sustainability through all partners.

“Sustainability is nothing new or something that sits outside our operations, it is something that forms an integral part of everything we do. It is simply our way of operating,” said Samuelsson. “This new sustainability commitment reflects Volvo Cars’ fundamental belief that we must also grow responsibly.”
