2016 BMW M2 Starts at $52,695, X4 M40i at $58,985

At the 2016 Detroit auto show, BMW revealed pricing for its two world debuts, the M2 coupe and the quirky X4 M40i crossover.

The 2016 BMW M2 will start at $52,695 including destination charge, which is $7,550 more than the M235i coupe, the current range-topper for the 2 Series coupe lineup. However, the extra money gets you more standard performance goodies like 19-inch alloy wheels, an M limited-slip differential, and a six-speed manual gearbox with automatic rev matching. Under the hood of the 2016 M2 is a turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6 generating 365 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque. An overboost function increases torque to 369 lb-ft for a short period of time. In addition to the six-speed manual, the M2 is also available with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The new range-topping member of the X4 family, the 2016 X4 M40i, on the other hand, starts at $58,795 including destination charge. Compared to the X4 xDrive35i, the X4 M40i is $8,100 more expensive. The same 3.0-liter turbo-six in the M2 is also found in the X4 M40i but detuned to 355 hp. Suspension changes have also been made to the X4 M40i to make sure that it has superior handling over lesser X4 models. An eight-speed automatic transmission is the only gearbox available.
