My Curves Have No Bounds: Rules Curvy Women Should Break

Rules guide us in our day-to-day lives. Some may be for our own good and safety, but there are others that are just meant to be broken.

If you’re a curvy woman, you have undoubtedly been taught rules for dressing to flatter your curves, whether it be from a magazine, something you’ve read online, or your mother. But through the ‘My Curves Have No Bounds’ series, we are proving that plus-size women do not need to abide by any ‘rules’. In fact, they can have fun breaking them!

The first step to dressing with confidence and wearing what you want is to break down the rules. So that being said, here are the top rules all curvy women have heard, and the gorgeous women proving they are totally worth breaking.

1. Stay away from horizontal stripes

You’ve probably heard the rule that unless you are a size 00, you should only opt for vertical stripes. Well, it’s time to forget this one! Stripes of all sizes (and directions) can look amazing on every body type.

2. No crop tops

You may have heard about the #RockTheCrop movement that arose after a body-shaming article was published in O Magazine earlier this year. Following the controversial piece, women of all sizes shared photos in their crop tops, proving that anyone can rock a rock.

3. Wear all-black

We’ve been told wearing all black is flattering, but how much fun is that? Bold and bright colours are the best way to showcase your personality and style.

4. If you must wear colour, wear dark bottoms

Wearing a coloured pant or even a white trouser can be intimidating, but it really can mix up your wardrobe to give it a fresh look.
5. Wear loose-fit clothing

You may have been told that wearing tight clothing showcases all the things you are trying to hide. We say, your curves are beautiful and will look amazing in a bodycon dress.

6. Don’t wear anything too oversized or voluminous

On the flip side, we’ve also been told that wearing oversized or voluminous garments will make us look bigger than we are. Wrong.

7. Don’t wear bold prints

This rule plays into the all-black suggestion. Bold prints can be fun and can really make a look pop.

8. And you definitely can’t mix prints

A few weeks back we did a whole showcase on print mixing for curvy gals, proving that this so-called “faux pas” is totally doable.

9. You must wear shapewear

Shapewear has been marketed heavily to plus-size women, due to their flattening and smoothing features. You may have heard mention of VBO (visible belly outline) or muffin top over the years, but your curves can look beautiful without the hassle of squeezing into those Spanx.

10. Cover up at the beach

Wearing a bikini as a plus-size woman may have been taboo in years past, but thanks to revolutionary women like GabiFresh, those days are behind us.

11. No miniskirts

Covering up our legs is another thing we have been told, but a good mini skirt looks great on any size.

12. And no shorts!

Just as we aren’t supposed to wear miniskirts, shorts fall into that same rule. But shorts are an incredible look, whatever the size of your legs.

13. You can’t wear cute workout clothes

Rarely will you see workout clothes marketed to a plus-size woman, but we loved when Women’s Running Magazine featured a plus size model on the cover. There are so many wonderfully cute plus-size athletic clothing that you shouldn’t feel the need to toss on an old T-shirt and pair of shorts when hitting the gym.

14. When picking lingerie, it’s best to keep covered up

For years, lingerie for plus-size women has been about coverage. But beautiful collections, such as Ashley Graham’s for Addition Elle, have made plus-size lingerie as sexy as can be.

15. And don’t let your bra show

With lingerie so cute, who sas you have to cover it up? We say, wear a bra under a sheer top, and channel your inner vixen.

Every woman, with no exceptions, deserves to feel comfortable in her own body, and to believe that the world is made just as much for her as the next person. That’s why with “My Curves Have No Bounds,” we’re going to get real and talk about our bodies, what we put on them, and how we feel about everything in between. We want to break down the barriers and outdated notions that plus-size women encounter everyday.
