Nissan-Based Mercedes-Benz Pickup Spied in Germany

A prototype for the upcoming Mercedes-Benz pickup has been spied in Germany. The new pickup, which appears to be based on the midsize Nissan Navara pickup, is expected to debut in concept form this fall at the Paris auto show.

While a previous report suggested the new model could be called the X-Class, our spy photographer says the new Mercedes pickup could be called the GLT-Class, which is more in line with the German automaker’s recent nomenclature. Despite its Nissan roots, expect the pickup to sport Mercedes-specific styling from a new front grille with three-pointed star and unique fascia as well as revised surface development to much of the exterior panels.

In addition to the black and white camouflage on the exterior, the automaker also kept the interior under wraps, suggesting a unique interior design for the luxury brand. Other noticeable changes include wider fender flares for a more aggressive demeanor.

While the Mercedes-Nissan technical partnership opens the door for the Mercedes pickup to use Nissan engines, the new model is likely to use the 2.1-liter turbodiesel I-4 (161 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque) and 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 (188 hp and 325 lb-ft) Bluetech engines from the Sprinter van.

Although the new pickup hasn’t been confirmed for the U.S. market, domestic automakers offer premium versions of their full-size pickups such as the Ford F-150 Platinum. If Mercedes does bring the new pickup to the U.S., it would be the first premium pickup for the midsize segment.
