On this episode of Roadkill, hosts David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan are digging deep into their collection of cars. Finally getting some love and attention is a late-model stock car that Finnegan bought over four years ago for $7,600, a relatively large chunk of change especially by Roadkill standards.

But as the duo points out, the car is packing a lot of goodies. It has a 350 small block engine, Jerico clutchless four-speed transmission, a Wilwood brake setup, and more. The car has good bones, but there’s one big problem. The race car is missing a Vehicle Identification Number and isn’t street-legal, which means it can’t be insured for Finnegan and Freiburger to drive on the street as originally planned.

The solution? Replace the VIN-less body with a street-legal one. After some digging, they find a 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo shell to serve as the new body for the race car. The team first has to gut and prep the race car and then make modifications to the Monte Carlo body. And after five days of cutting and welding, the Roadkill duo succeeds in creating the “NASCarlo.”

NASCarlo gets off to a good start. The engine fires up and sounds good and the car runs well enough to drive to Perris Auto Speedway, about 80 miles away from Roadkill headquarters. The Roadkill crew has the dirt oval track to themselves and partakes in a simple competition to determine who can put down the fastest lap.

Freiburger straps into NASCarlo first for a few practice laps. He makes the wise decision to start slow, as this was his first time piloting NASCarlo.
